Akita Exercise

Akitas, like other large dogs, need plenty of fresh air and exercise to maintain good health. A large yard that is fenced is ideal for the Akita. They need space to romp around and play. Whether you walk your Akita or play with him, your dog needs to be exercised on a daily basis.

If your Akita is a puppy, an exercise regimen is not needed. Puppies do need to play and go on short walks for exercise. However, your adult Akita needs a regular exercise routine to ensure good health. Taking a couple a brisk walks each day is sufficient. Akitas also like to play outside each day. They enjoy chasing birds being able to run around the yard.

While Akitas enjoy the outdoors they should not be kept outdoors for long extended periods of time. Be sure to bring them indoors when it rains or whenever there is extreme weather. Though they prefer cooler weather because of their thick coats, bad weather can contribute to poor health in your Akita.

Begin teaching your Akita basic obedience commands the minute you bring him home. Teach your dog how to properly walk on a leash while still a puppy. As your puppy grows he will get larger and stronger and more difficult to handle unless you have established early who is in command.

Your Akita will be able to get more exercise if he can learn to walk well on a leash and obey simple commands such as “sit” and “stay.” Akitas are very intelligent and learn quickly. Always use a leash as Akitas can become aggressive towards other dogs or animals. Akita is bred to guard and protect at all times. Socialization is highly recommended to avoid problems around strangers and other animals.

When playing with your Akita do not play biting or tug of war games. Though this may be cute when he is a puppy, as an adult his teeth and jaw a very strong and could hurt others. Games such as fetch with a ball, Frisbee, or stick are best.

Akitas are sensitive. They require love, attention, and exercise. Your Akita can become depressed if these needs are not met. A daily routine of exercise and fresh air will keep your Akita happy and healthy.
