Akita Rescue Information
The Akita have been registered with the American Kennel Club since 1972. They are beautiful, strong, and elegant dogs. The Akita originated from Japan where only the rich and noble were able to own one. Unfortunately, today many Akita are given up for adoption or sent to shelters.
Akita are often given up or sent to shelters due to their size. Believe it or not, many people who get an Akita puppy do not realize how large the dog will grow. They like them when they are a cute fuzzy puppy, but the adult dog is not desirable and so the Akita ends up at a shelter.
Some owners do not realize that because of their large size they need to be trained and socialized well from the start. The Akita breed can be aggressive around people and other pets if they have not been well socialized and trained to be obedient. It is very important that the owner establishes who is master from the beginning or the Akita will assume that position. An owner who has not trained their Akita may give their pet up because they can not handle him.
Fortunately there are rescue organizations in which the Akita can be placed for those who cannot handle their dog. It is preferable to place an unwanted pet in one of these facilities rather than abandoning them on the streets. The largest Akita rescue group is called the Akita Rescue Society of America, Inc. (ARSA). This is well known group that was founded in 1976 and has been instrumental in helping rescue Akita dogs since.
Besides trying to place an Akita in the right home, they also teach prospective owners about the Akita dog breed before they get a puppy. The Akita is a special dog and can make an excellent family pet with the proper training, attention, and care. Too often people give their Akita away at the first sign of trouble rather than making the effort to train them properly. Full grown Akita can be difficult to work with due to their size and strength if they have not been trained well.
If you are interested in an Akita, you might consider rescuing one from a shelter. Many Akita that are placed in shelters never get adopted. The shelters work with each dog to train and prepare them to be placed in good homes. If you want to rescue an Akita then make sure that you are schooled in caring for one. As an owner you must be committed to seeing that your new pet is trained and socialized. The Akita dog is very intelligent and learns quickly, even as an adult dog.
A rescued Akita should be seen by a vet to ensure ongoing good health. As with all dogs, the Akita are prone to certain health problems in which you and vet can work together to prevent or treat.
There are ARSA facilities across the country. To find out more about Akita rescue you can visit their website at www.AkitaRescue.com.
